About Fort McKavett State Historic Site

Fort McKavett was an active Indian Wars Fort from 1852 ~ 1859 and again from 1868 ~ 1883. Home to several Regiments of Cavalry, Dragoons, and Infantry over the years, the Post took part in all the major Indian Wars Battles and Mapping Expeditions of Western Texas.

Home to several notable Officers including Mackenzie, Shafter, Otis, Pennypacker, Holabird, Clitz, and many more.

Home to all four of the Black Regiments, in fact, the 24th Infantry Regiment was founded at Fort McKavett. The Post was also home for the 1st Infantry, 2nd Dragoons, 8th Infantry, 4th Cavalry, 35th Infantry, 9th Cavalry, 38th Infantry, 24th Infantry, 25th Infantry, 10th Cavalry, 10th Infantry, 22nd Infantry, and 16th Infantry during it's active duty.

Located near the headwaters of the San Saba River, the Post is built on a hill in a major crossroads of West Texas. On his Texas Tour, Lt. General William T. Sherman called Fort McKavett's whitewashed buildings "the prettiest Post in Texas".

Restored buildings are maintained by the Texas Historical Commission and visitors are welcome year around. A living history event takes place in March of each year with over 120 people in vintage uniforms and clothing taking part.
